Orange Amplification
About
Orange Amplification is the independent British amp maker known for its thick, creamy tube tone and distinctive orange-covered cabinets, embraced everywhere from 1970s blues-rock to modern stoner, doom, and metal.
History
Cliff Cooper founded Orange in 1968, opening a shop and recording studio in London before building his first amplifiers. Orange amps quickly gained a reputation for a warmer, more compressed, and more harmonically rich distortion than the era's other British amps, and the company adopted a distinctive graphics-only badge system on early models so the amps could be recognized by sight alone. Orange heads like the OR120 became closely associated with early Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac. The company has remained independently owned through decades of industry consolidation, and in 2006 launched the Tiny Terror, a compact 15-watt head that kicked off the modern "lunchbox amp" trend of small, high-quality tube heads. Orange's thick, saturated voicing has made it a favorite among modern stoner, doom, and heavy rock guitarists, while the Rockerverb series remains its flagship two-channel workhorse for gigging players across genres.
